The Back Story:
20 years ago this fall, Casey's family hosted a German exchange student for most of a school year. Nico Wirtz came to us through other friends we have in his German hometown, Ibbenbueren.
During the big-hair band late '80s, Nico was in style with long hair and leopard pants. He was also a mean guitar player. He came to love Tex-Mex cuisine, MTV, Saturday Night Live, and the vastness of everything in the U.S. (big malls, parking lots, refrigerators, etc.). He even got his driver's license and went to prom while here.
He left as our brother and has continued to be. Since then, we've visited many times back and forth, and talk regularly. Now sporting short hair, Nico lives in Berlin with his girlfriend Mailin. He's been a professional musician his whole career, putting out probably half a dozen CDs with his bands, and he's written two novels. He's also a really great guy.
Nico and Mailin visited us in Boulder for 5 days, and my mom, Gary and Jake all came as well. We had tons of fun celebrating "Nico's 20th Anniversary Reunion Weekend."

He specifically requested to go country dancing...so we took them to Denver's Grizzly Rose Saloon & Dance Emporium.

Wow! We loved being in Colorado! It was so great to see all of you again. I've talked to many former exchange students who spent a year in the US and very few are still in touch with their former host families. Seems like I hit the jackpot with my (second) familiy abroad. See you guys soon on this side of the ocean.
Love, Nico
